E-Collections: Downloadable & Streaming Media

  • Mango Languages -- an online system for learning languages; offering 36 languages, including English as a Second Language options.  To log in, enter your Danville Public Library card barcode number (for licensing reasons, access is limited to DPL cardholders).
  • Music Online for Public Libraries -- 600,000+ tracks of streaming music, available free to Danville Public Library patrons for home listening.  Collections include American Song, Classical Music Library, Contemporary World Music, and Smithsonian Global Sound  [Help].
  • My Media Mall -- A collection of downloadable Audiobooks, eBooks, and Videos available free to patrons of Danville Public Library (and other local libraries).  For help getting started, take the Tour, or consult the Quick Start Guide or our eBook Cheat Sheet.  There is a list of compatible devices that work with My Media Mall posted on their homepage.  When signing in to the database, select "Illinois Heartland Library System" as your library; enter your full library card barcode number; and enter the last 4 digits of your phone number as the PIN number.
  • American Archive Pilot Project -- Online collection of video and audio content from the archives of local PBS affiliate WILL.
  • American Memory Online Films -- View early motion pictures online.  Part of the Library of Congress Motion Picture and Television Reading Room.
  • Cinema Sites -- Directory of links covering all aspects of cinema.  Good first start for research.
  • Described and Captioned Media Program -- Government program providing free loans of "open captioned" videos to deaf and hard of hearing persons, teachers, parents, and others.
  • Ebert & Siskel/Roeper Reviews -- Over 5,000 streaming reviews from Roger Ebert's movie review shows with Gene Siskel, Richard Roeper, and others.
  • Ebertfest -- Held every April at the Virginia Theatre in Champaign, it's the coolest Illinois film event outside of Chicago.  Urbana native Ebert showcases quality films overlooked by the public and invites the filmmakers to attend.
  • Educational Media Reviews Online -- Video, DVD, and CD-ROM reviews on materials from major educational and documentary distributors.
  • Essential Nonfiction Videos -- Core list of the best nonfiction videos, compiled by the Videolib Listserv.

  • Internet Movie Database -- One of the most comprehensive film sites on the Net.
  • KIDS FIRST! -- From the The Coalition for Quality Children's Media, reviews of children's films, videos, DVDs, audio recordings, TV programs and CD-ROMs.
  • Media Resources Center, UC-Berkeley -- Extensive film & videographies, links.
  • Metacritic-- Excellent source of current popular film and video reviews from the country's leading critics.
  • Motion Picture Association of America -- Information about the voluntary ratings system plus a searchable ratings database.
  • Movies Unlimited -- The largest distributor of home video.
  • Moving Image Collections (MIC) -- Integrated online catalog of moving images, with an archive directory and links to resources on moving images and preservation.
  • National Board of Review -- One of the nation's oldest film advocacy organizations, it is perhaps best known for its ranking of the year's best films.
  • Screen It! -- Movie reviews to help parents decide what is appropriate for their kids.
  • Sight and Sound Top Ten Films of All Time -- We're awash in "Best" lists, but here's one worth noting.  Since 1952, the esteemed British film journal Sight and Sound has polled the world's leading film critics every ten years for their picks.
  • Video Librarian Online -- The best source for reviews of non-fiction video.
  • Video Round Table -- Part of the American Library Association, VRT advocates for video collections and services in libraries, and forges alliances with other national film and video organizations.
