"One story... Four Lives... A million ways it can end." |
People often say "the book was better than the movie," but is this necessarily true? Find out with The New Classics: Great Books to Great Films from the Past 50 Years, a "sequel" to the library's original book/movie discussion series Great Books to Great Films presented in 2009-10.
The new series focuses on books and movies created since 1960. Each month, participants read a novel on their own and, on the second Monday evening of the month, gather at the library to view the film version of the book. An informal discussion follows each film screening (those wishing to discuss the books in advance of the screenings are invited to the library's Book Club, which will read New Classics selections the month prior).
We'll explore what makes the best adaptations work, and the strengths and weaknesses of different storytelling media. Our selections will encompass a variety of genres, including drama, comedy, adventure, fantasy, suspense, and movies based on true stories.
Screenings will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the library's first floor meeting room, with informal discussion immediately following the movies facilitated by DPL Audiovisual Librarian Mike Boedicker. Refreshments will be served. The events are free and open to the public, and no registration is required.
This year-long series is made possible by a grant from the Danville Library Foundation. For more information, contact the Audiovisual Department at (217) 477-5224 or email mboedicker@hotmail.com.
